Putting On Your Mask First

You've heard it every time you've boarded a plane. The flight attendant stands in the aisle, holds up the oxygen mask, and says: "If the cabin loses pressure, put your own mask on before helping others."

Every time, it feels a little strange. Shouldn't we help the people around us first? What about the person sitting next to us? What about our kids?

But here's the thing. It makes complete sense when you think about it.

If you pass out trying to help someone else, you can't help anyone. You become the problem instead of the solution. The only way to truly show up for the people who need you is to make sure you're okay first.

Mental health works exactly the same way.

Putting your mask on first isn't selfish.

It's how you stay ready to give everything you have to the life and the people that matter most to you.

When You're Running on Empty

Most of us are pretty good at pushing through. We go to work, take care of our families, meet our responsibilities, and keep moving, even when we're struggling inside.

But there's a cost to that. Stress builds up. Anxiety gets louder. Small problems start to feel bigger. And eventually, running on empty catches up with us, usually at the worst possible time.

When your mental health is suffering, everything suffers. Your patience gets shorter. Your focus gets harder. The people you love most get a version of you that isn't really you.

Staying on Top of It

The good news is that taking care of your mental health doesn't have to mean something is seriously wrong. In fact, the best time to tend to your mental health is before things get difficult.

Think of it like going to the gym. You don't wait until you can't walk to start exercising. You build the habit, stay consistent, and your body is stronger for it when life gets hard.

Therapy works the same way. Regular sessions give you tools, perspective, and a safe space to process whatever life is throwing at you, so you're always ready. Always at your best.

For the People You Love

Here's what nobody talks about enough: taking care of yourself is one of the most generous things you can do for the people around you.

When your mental health is strong, you show up differently. You're more patient with your kids. More present with your partner. More focused at work. More able to be there when someone you love really needs you.

Putting your mask on first isn't selfish. It's how you stay ready to give everything you have to the life and the people that matter most to you.
